Harnett County Farmland & Families

Agricultural roots run deep and define much of the character and economy in Harnett County.  As a generational farmer, Kate understands the challenges and joys that come with farming life. She believes with thoughtful planning we can create a future where agriculture and development coexist in a sustainable, mutually beneficial relationship.

Our Farms Benefit Us All:

Did you know in 2023 the total economic impact of agriculture in Harnett County was $303 Million, according to (NC Agr; College of Agriculture and Life Sciences)?

This amount represents direct impact (sale of crops, livestock, and other farm products); indirect impact (spending by farmers on supplies, equipment, etc.); and, induced impact (spending by farm workers on housing, groceries, etc.). This economic impact across communities benefits us all!

And yet, North Carolina ranks second highest in the nation for farmland loss. While these losses are felt across the state, they are especially damaging for Harnett County. Currently, the number of farm operations in Harnett County is 563, a 12% decrease since 2017.

With the rapid population growth, demand for housing has increased, resulting in the accelerated loss of farms and forestland every year. Over the past 30 years, the number of tax parcels of land – an indicator of farmland loss – has increased by a staggering 65%.

Having grown up on a farm in Harnett County, the one she continues to farm today, Kate understands the value our farmlands contribute to our community. The significance of agriculture to the well-being of our county should never be overlooked or underestimated. This commitment will help us preserve our county’s rural roots, strengthen our economy, and ensure that future generations can continue to farm.

By valuing and protecting our farmlands, while finding sustainable ways to grow development, we can set our county apart and foster a strong identity and pride in our agricultural community and its way of life.

A vote for Kate is a vote for our farming community and the growing number of families calling Harnett County home.
